The quick guide
A little help
getting connected.
Opening a contact takes a moment. Here’s what happens next.
Save a contact to your phone
- Unlock your phone and hold it near the NFC tag. Open the notification that appears. You can also open the person’s shared link.
- On their Zekey page, choose Add to contacts.
- Your phone opens a contact preview or downloads a contact file. If downloaded, open it from your browser’s downloads or Files app.
- Choose the option to add or import the contact, review the details and confirm. The wording varies by phone and contacts app.
On iPhone, try opening the page directly in Safari if a preview doesn’t open inside another app. Zekey cannot silently add a contact to your phone.
Open a contact from a QR code
Choose Show contact QR on a person’s page. Scan it with another phone’s camera and open the contact option that appears. This QR contains the contact details directly, so a compatible camera can show a contact preview without opening a website or downloading a file.
On the same iPhone, open the page in Safari and try touching and holding the QR image for contact options. You still confirm before adding the contact.
A saved or printed QR keeps the details from when it was generated. After any changes, download a new QR from the page. The NFC page link continues to show the latest published details.
Call, email or share
Tap the mobile number to open your phone’s calling app, or the email address to open your email app. Share contact opens your phone’s share menu, or copies the page link when sharing isn’t available.
After someone changes their details, the page updates. Your previously saved contact does not sync automatically; open the page and save the new details when needed.
Set up an NFC tag with NFC Tools
- Publish the contact from your Zekey workspace and copy its complete public link. Check that it opens while signed out.
- In NFC Tools, open Write → Add a record → URL / URI.
- Enter the full contact link, including https://. Use the unique link from that person’s contact page.
- Choose Write and hold the phone near your writable NFC tag. Writing replaces the tag’s existing records, so use a tag intended for this contact.
- Test with another phone. Confirm it opens the correct person’s page and that Add to contacts works.
Changes to the published details keep the same link, so you don’t need to rewrite the tag. Avoid permanently locking the tag until you are sure the URL is correct.
Something isn’t opening?
Check your internet connection, unlock your phone, and try a different position against the tag. Enable NFC on phones that have an NFC setting. You can always ask the person for their link instead.
A “Contact not found” message means the link is incorrect or the page is unavailable. Ask the person who shared it for their current link. For incorrect contact details, contact that person.
Managing your page? See the owner guide.
Developer and NFC setup
Zekey Contact pages can be shared now. Owner setup, the API and secure-tag provisioning are in a private beta. Access to those tools is separate from opening a public contact page.
Zekey Bench is a local diagnostic tool in the project repository. It checks the software setup and can look for a USB reader. Reader detection alone does not prove tag compatibility or authenticity. An iPhone and a compatible tag are still needed to test the recipient experience.
An account or API request failed
If you have beta access, keep the error code and request identifier and share them with the person managing your access. Do not share passwords, API keys or secure-tag verification URLs. Retry a temporary service error later; a permission error requires the correct account or access scope.
A secure-tag result and a contact page serve different purposes. A contact QR or ordinary NFC link does not prove that a physical tag is genuine.
